Charity

The LOF is hoping to embark on charitable projects that promote eye health in the UK and abroad. According to WHO estimates, there are 45 million that are clinically blind  worldwide. 80% of which have a reversible or preventable cause of blindness, which could be addressed should they have access to eye health facilities. For example it is thought that 200 million people in India require treatment for an eye condition. However, only 10% of this population is being reached.

A simple cataract operation can cure a large proportion of these people, or even simpler, a pair of glasses.

LOF is currently exploring avenues on how we can dramatically increase the amount of glasses we as a nation donate to places of need. For example, were are currently in discussion with the Lanarkshire PCT and the network of opticians that provide glasses and eye health services to this region of Scotland (the LENS scheme). We aim to encourage opticians in this network to start taking a slightly more active approach in asking their clients for old/unwanted glasses. It is our prediction that this will increase the number of spectacle donation by several factors

If you want to get involved with this project then you can start of my printing a copy of the posters below and distributing them to your local optician. Initially, there may be some resistance to this idea, but perseverance in key. Please contact us if you have any fund raising ideas.

Visionary Ideas...

LOF would like to offer help to anyone that has a great idea on how to improve eye health in the UK and worldwide. Be it, a unique fundraising idea, or novel ways of promoting eye health, we will strive to support you, or put you in touch with someone that can help. We feel that there may be hundreds of eye care professionals that are interested in starting a charitable project but do not know how to go about it, or indeed do not have the time. By building a network of these like-minded people, we have a greater chance of executing these plans.
